The White House dismisses Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s claim the Iraq war was the worst foreign policy mistake in US history. Press Secretary Tony Snow on NBC’s Meet the Press says pulling the troops out now would be a huge mistake.
--- The President understands the war is tough. They’re unpopular. He doesn’t like having to be at war, and would love to be able to return the forces home. But the cost of leaving before we’ve succeeded is too high for this president or any president to risk.
Yesterday, the Senate failed to agree to consider a resolution against the deployment of more troops to Iraq. Even so, Delaware Democrat Senator Joseph Biden, who was on CBS Face the Nation today, says he’s working on a bill that would overturn the 2002 authorization for the Iraq invasion.

A transport helicopter has crashed in Afghanistan, killing eight service members, injuring 14 others. Marine Major William Mitchell in Bagram says it does not appear that the CH-47 Chinook was shot down.
--- All indications lead us to believe that there was a sudden engine malfunction or an engine problem that caused a total loss of control of the aircraft.
Mitchell says the pilot had reported the engine failure shortly before the chopper went down earlier today.
A 56-year-old Iranian immigrant is in custody in Chicago following the hammer beating deaths of his wife, his sister-in-law and his mother-in-law.
The storm has passed leaving behind avalanche threats in the mountains of Utah, Colorado and Montana. At least one snowmobiler dead.
